It’s a short post today and one that if I had a better grasp/any grasp of Hebrew grammar probably wouldn’t even be posted…..but work with me here. I was reading, in the book of Mark, where Jesus appoints His disciples. Here is the passage and I’ve underlined the bits that hit me.

Jesus went up on a mountainside and called to him those he wanted, and they came to him. He appointed twelve that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach and to have authority to drive out demons. Mark 3:13-15

I’m pretty sure the use of the word might isn’t designed to communicate a ‘maybe’ in the way I might use it. When I say that I might do something, there is a doubt, a question as to whether I will or won’t. If I’m to read that passage with my modern translation on I pick up an idea that the disciples could perhaps be with Him but they ‘might’ not. That there was doubt in Jesus’ mind as to whether He would send them out or not.

I doubt that this is true but imagine it was? Imagine that Jesus wasn’t sure if they’d come or not. Imagine He wasn’t sure if He’d release them or not. I mean there was of course they chance that they wouldn’t make it, that they could have walked away at some point. Ultimately Judas did at the end so it could have happened before that point.
