Can you hear?

I had a chat with someone recently which has caused me to realise something. They are someone I trust, someone I look up to and someone who challenges me.

In the course of our conversation we talked about church, vision and how important it was for us to help people apply all we talk about on a Sunday so people can engage with it in their everyday. I gently asked in the conversation how I could do that better, because in all honesty I thought that I had the last few times I’d spoken. The person stopped and had what looked like a moment of revelation. Then they said something like this;

“The problem isn’t with what we’re saying, its that I’m not doing it!”

I’ve taken creative license here – this is what I heard!

Either way it started a train of thought for me. So many people in our services, especially those in and around my age, have grown so comfortable that we have forgotten how to hear. We’ve grown accostomed to listening to teaching and thinking that it applies to someone else because we believe we have it all sorted. That means we’ve listened to endless messages, filled with truth (if I do say so myself) but never tried to apply them in our everyday.

How much are we missing?

We need to wake up, listen up and start to fight for something again. I have work to do!
