This year my son and I started into our discipleship pathway for his teenage years. That all sounds very structured and perfect – it really isn’t. All it really means is that we are intentionally getting up and spending time with Jesus before we start our days. We have started by reading through the scriptures with the book “God’s big plan” as our guide. Up until now we have made it up to the point where Abram is called by God to move to where God is calling him.
This morning I decided to ask him what he has learned so far. I asked him two questions. The first one was; What have you learned about God? Here are his answers;
He always gives us options
He learned this through looking at the fall and the descent of humankind that happened from there. We discussed why God had put the tree of the knowledge of good and evil in the garden in the first place. We talked about the importance of choice and how for God to love us perfectly He had to give us choice. If there is no choice then there is no real love, only control.
He never gives up
He was struck by how God kept giving humanity options even when we were messing up royally. Whether it was Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah and his family, the nations that came off the Ark, and then of course with Abram and Israel, God always trusts us and gives us a shot at the Kingdom.
The second question I asked him was ; What have you found out about you? He definitely had less thoughts and needed more prompting on this one
I like Tim Hortons
Oh boy, typical 13 year old. around once every month we move out of our kitchen and grab a breakfast from Tim Hortons with my wife. I’m not saying this has been his favourite part of the discipleship journey but……….
I’m not perfect
He was struck by the imperfection of humanity and the mistakes that they have made. He saw how crazy it was when they had the option of submitting to God but it also made him realise that he wasn’t that much different to the people he was reading about.
So, there you go – some 13 year old wisdom
