The shadow

I’ve had another one of those mornings where the Lord has caught my attention with something. This morning I really wanted to meet with Him but I was struggling to focus, my mind was wandering. I’ve found the best thing to do in moments like this is to worship, to remind myself of who is rather than focus on my stuff. As I was worshipping the words of this song by Phil Wickham stood out to me.

Then through the darkness Your loving-kindness tore through the shadows of my soul. The work is finished, the end is written
Jesus Christ, my living hope

Living Hope – Phil Wickham

The line about the shadow of my soul really struck me. I’m always surprised at the shadow we can create in our souls. I’m shocked at how easily we allow ‘stuff‘ to come in and infect our souls. I’m so thankful that God can easily cut through that stuff!

As I moved onto read the Bible I came across the following verse which jumped out to me.

LORD, what are human beings that you care for them, mere mortals that you think of them? They are like a breath; their days are like a fleeting shadow. Psalm 44:3-4

Then a few days later I saw this

But who am I, and who are my people, that we should be able to give as generously as this? Everything comes from you, and we have given you only what comes from your hand. We are foreigners and strangers in your sight, as were all our ancestors. Our days on earth are like a shadow, without hope. 1 Chron 29:14-15

So what’s God speaking to me about here?

I can’t help from reading these passages but think that He is focusing me on His goodness, His majesty and His sovereignty again. So often I can get puffed up at how good I am doing and I keep the focus very clearly on myself. These verses remind me that on my own, without Him, my life is just a shadow. With Him, the light of the world, my shadow becomes illuminated with His goodness, shadows can’t exist where light is directly shining.

Oh Lord, keep me walking in your light and teach me not to lean on my own understanding. Let me surrender every aspect of my life to you.

Have your way. Your Kingdom come, Your will be done!
