The victory is yours

The passage below is written by people known as the sons of Korah. These guys had a pretty colourful past throughout the generations but under the time of David they became great leaders in choral and orchestral music in the tabernacle. I love this section of scripture.

You are my King and my God who decrees victories for Jacob. Through you we push back our enemies; through your name we trample our foes. I put no trust in my bow, my sword does not bring me victory; but you give us victory over our enemies, you put our adversaries to shame. In God we make our boast all day long, and we will praise your name forever. Psalm 44:4-8

Ten times in this short passage they make reference to the fact it is not the people of Israel (Jacob) who have achieved any victory but God through them has brought them as a nation into a place of success. I can’t be sure of which victories they are describing in this instance but it shows such wisdom to respond in the way they have here.

Too often when we experience success and victory in our lives we can be easily tempted to allow the glory to get into our heads rather than go to Jesus. We become drunk on the feeling of success and the praise we might receive from being a part of that. As we all know this is super dangerous – none of us were built to be worshipped. This ‘worship’ of humans is often the cause of downfalls and crashes as the person tries to hold up the weight of the success they are wrongly carrying.

Of course the only one who can carry that weight is God. He is the only one who can receive our worship without becoming a tyrant dictator who will use people through the power He has amassed.

So, in conclusion, lets make a practise of giving our worship and praise back to God. Let Him be the one to lift us up, not anyone else.

“Lord, we put no trust in our abilities or talents. We put our trust in you and we boast in your name. Thank you Father”
