When it comes to my relationship and experience of God I often feel caught in a tension.
One one hand I have seen God do the most incredible things in my life. I’ve experienced His transformation in my life, I’ve witnessed personally how He has led me into where I am and seen how He has established who I am. I have heard so many God stories, healings, miracles, and have watched people meet God in so many ways. I have seen and experienced more than many followers of Jesus will in their lifetime.
I am deeply thankful. I am satisfied.
Well, kind of.
You see because I have seen and experienced His goodness. Because I have known what it is to experience His presence in such a profound way I have developed a hunger and a desire for more. I just want more of Him. I want to see the Kingdom come in ever increasing ways.
This can create a dissatisfaction in me. Not dissatisfied with what I’ve seen but perhaps with what I haven’t.
What do I do with this? How can I manage this tension?
As I think about it I think about the physical process of hunger.
Our bodies need food. Each day when we wake our bodies tell us of their desire for food. Our bellies desire satisfaction, so we eat. Once we have eaten our desire for the food has hopefully been satisfied and we become content. However our need for food is not static. Our bodies desire that food again, they desire to be satisfied again. It doesn’t mean we didn’t appreciate or enjoy the previous meal, its just that our relationship with food will always require a ‘more’. It doesn’t necessarily mean we are greedy, just hungry for more.
Its the same, except even more heightened, when it comes to our desire for the presence of God. We will always desire more of Him. We will experience His goodness and be satisfied but soon we will desire to meet with Him again. There wont come a time where we think “I’m done, that’s enough God.”
Thats impossible because there is so much more of Him to know and experience.
If you feel that same tension today then welcome to the team. Its par for the course! Lets always remain thankful for the things we have seen and experienced whilst still hungering for what is next.
Even more important than that, let’s continue to allow God to form us into who He has created as to be.
