When Abrahams son Isaac is old enough to marry, Abraham sends his servant back to his homeland to find a wife from his own people. This is a huge task for the servant. Abraham sends him with 10 camels and all sorts of goodies to reward the family from where the girl comes from.
The servant arrives at a well just before the time when the women of the town would come out to collect water. I love the next three words and the accompanying verse.
Then he prayed, “LORD, God of my master Abraham, make me successful today, and show kindness to my master Abraham Genesis 24:12
I know this maybe seems funny to notice but I can just imagine this poor guy, with the weight of Abrahams inheritance on his shoulders, knowing that his only option was God. Abraham picked a good guy for the task.
I love what happens next.
Before he had finished praying, Rebekah came out with her jar on her shoulder. She was the daughter of Bethuel son of Milkah, who was the wife of Abraham’s brother Nahor. The woman was very beautiful, a virgin; no man had ever slept with her. She went down to the spring, filled her jar and came up again. Genesis 24:15-16
He hadn’t even finished and God was already moving! Now, most of us would be done by now. We had prayed our prayer and this girl has showed up – job done – this is the girl. However, the servant is still relying on the Lord.
Without saying a word, the man watched her closely to learn whether or not the LORD had made his journey successful. Genesis 24:21
I love his diligence and reliance on the Lord.
It becomes clear that she is the girl for Isaac and so he returns to her house and tells her family why he has come. After some chat they agree and Rebekah agrees to come with him.
What would his response be?
Then the man bowed down and worshiped the LORD Genesis 24:26
We could all learn a lot from this servant!
