Dreams – why?

So, we have looked at how God uses dreams at the start of the gospels and I’ve talked about why in western culture we often discount the role of dreams in following God and listening to His voice. In this post I want to ask why God uses dreams.

I get that not all of us may be convinced that God still does speak in dreams but it is so prevalent in the scriptures, in both the Old and New testaments, that it is hard to argue against it. Here are some examples.

  • Abimelech is warned by God not to sleep with Sarah in a dream
  • Jacob’s vision of the ladder of angels was a dream. He is also told in a dream to return home to Esau and God even warns his uncle in a dream about how to treat Jacob
  • The whole story of Joseph centres around dreams
  • The same can be said for Daniel. If it weren’t for his ability to interpret dreams he would never have received the favour he did.
  • The dream of a man led Gideon to fight the midianites
  • Solomon gains his wisdom through a dream
  • Josephs story and the Magi
  • Pilates wife has a dream where it was revealed that Jesus was innocent.

I have also had personal experiences and talked to others who’ve had the same. I am convinced that God speaks through dreams.

But why? We’ve discussed why we find the concept difficult to understand? Here a 3 reasons I think God uses dreams

  • He has our full attention – when we sleep we are fully concentrated on that one thing alone. Our eyes are closed, our phones aren’t distracting us, no one is contacting us. Where and when else would God be able to find as in that place?
  • He isn’t fighting our logic – so often when God speaks to us when we are awake we are asking ourselves all sorts of questions; was that God or was it me? Did I hear that right? In a dream none of this happens as our brains aren’t engaged in that way.
  • He isn’t fighting our world’s rules – I forget that God exists outside of time, space and matter. This means He can do and experiences things that don’t compute in our world. In a dream He can bypass all of our worldly rules and conditions because of now free they are.

There are many more reasons I am sure but I hope these posts have helped us to see the value and importance of dreams. As we move into dream season I hope your dreams are saturated with His fullness.
