Process and Perfection

The idea of being perfect is one that has haunted people for years. Sports people spend years and years going over practices and moves to ‘perfect’ their craft. Artists and writers slave over their mediums to ‘perfect’ their projects. Parents try to raise ‘perfect’ kids, kids try to gain perfect scores on their test results. We love the idea of being perfect.

When I think of being perfect I think not just of having no defects, but of being complete and full, no room for improvement, nothing else left to accomplish. I think that’s how most of us think of it, right?

However, when I was reading the book of Luke I saw these things written about Jesus as He was getting older.

And the child grew and became strong; he was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was on him. Luke 2:40

And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. Luke 2:52

Now, we know that Jesus was without sin, and therefore perfect (although He never said that of himself even though we can conclude this as His Father in Heaven is described this way), but in these verses we can see that there is growing and improvement that Jesus had to make.

But, it’s not that He wasn’t born perfect and had to grow into it, He was already perfect and without sin when He was born, so how come He had to ‘grow’ in anything?

I totally have no answers for this but it has certainly peaked my interest!

If anything it gives me hope that if Jesus had room to grow then so do I, so do you, so do we all. We must always be the kind of people who position themselves to listen, learn and grow into all that God has for us.

There is a process even in the middle of illusive perfection.
