As I read the opening account of the book of Luke I was struck by a few things
Many have undertaken to draw up an account of the things that have been fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. With this in mind, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught. Luke 1:1-4
Luke has chosen to undertake this task for two reasons, technically one which is expressed twice. Firstly, he realises how important the things that were passed down to him from the eye witnesses of Jesus were. He therefore wants to do the same to a new generation. Therefore, he wants the next generations to be as certain as the eye witnesses were of Jesus were.
This reminded me of another verse that has been behind a lot of our thinking in our 100 year vision.
Let this be written for a future generation, that a people not yet created may praise the LORD: Psalm 102:18
I think we need to put a lot of work and thought into how we are passing on the story of what God is doing amongst us. Where I live is a town that has experienced revival and we are still fueled by the stories of 1859. I say fueled rather than sustained because we can’t live off those stories, they should catapult us into the ‘more’ of God.
I think its time to get serious about this task!
