In the creation story in Genesis 2 we hear a more detailed telling of the creation of humankind. We hear this famous line in the story;

The LORD God said, “It is not good for the man to be alone.

This is the first thing the Lord says is ‘not good‘ in all that He has created. Everything else was good (apart from the sea, but that’s a longer story) but this one was not. So God gets to putting this right.

I will make a helper suitable for him.”

The search begins.

Now the LORD God had formed out of the ground all the wild animals and all the birds in the sky. He brought them to the man to see what he would name them; and whatever the man called each living creature, that was its name. So the man gave names to all the livestock, the birds in the sky and all the wild animals.

This is such a genius part of the Scripture – imagine having that job! But back to the main point

But for Adam no suitable helper was found. So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.The man said, “This is now bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called ‘woman,’ for she was taken out of man. ”That is why a man leaves his father and mother and is united to his wife, and they become one flesh. Adam and his wife were both naked, and they felt no shame. Genesis 2:18-25

When it comes to our identity, who we are, and the partners we choose in life, we must realise that a lot of thought is required, because God put a lot of thought into the process.

Its become popular to say that we can we just choose whoever we want- surely everyone deserves love? However, that is not what we see modelled here. We can’t be sure if there were other ‘helpers’ that Adam was happy with and God rejected, all we know is that none were suitable.

All want to say here is that it God searched all creation unsuccessfully and then created a very specific type of human being to be Adams partner it seems like that is the partner we are supposed to choose.
