For such a time

I have been reading the book of Esther and have come to the point in the story which I have heard quoted many times over my life.

Up to this point we know that Esther, a Jewish woman, has been made a queen in Persia. Her uncle, who is more like her dad, has got into trouble one of the with the kings officials. Not only has he got into trouble but it has meant trouble for all the Jewish people – they were to be wiped out because of Mordecai’s actions.

Mordecai gets a message to his niece, asking her to do something, to use her influence with the king. She replies initially by saying she will be killed if she comes to the king with this request. The following verses explain his reply and the line I’ve heard quoted so many times.

When Esther’s words were reported to Mordecai, he sent back this answer: “Do not think that because you are in the king’s house you alone of all the Jews will escape. For if you remain silent at this time, relief and deliverance for the Jews will arise from another place, but you and your father’s family will perish. And who knows but that you have come to your royal position for such a time as this? Esther 4:12-14

I’ve always read this thinking it would be easy for Esther to move. When I was younger I held a view that if God has placed you somewhere then He has it all worked out and it will be obvious what is to be done. I’ve imagined it would be simple enough. That is simply not the case. Esthers response indicates what it could cost her.

Go, gather together all the Jews who are in Susa, and fast for me. Do not eat or drink for three days, night or day. I and my attendants will fast as you do. When this is done, I will go to the king, even though it is against the law. And if I perish, I perish. Esther 4:16

The rest of the story marks the partnership between Esthers courage and God’s provision. She holds banquets and makes bold requests while God wakes the King up and reminds him of how Mordecai helped him when people plotted against him. In the end the Jewish people are saved.

I believe God often places His people ‘for such a time as this‘ but that is no guarantee of an easy ride. We will need to contend, show courage and move into all He has it we want to see His kingdom come. Our job is to listen and partner with Him on the journey ahead.
