There’s a story of an American pastor who preached a sermon about God’s but and how we all need to pay attention to His but.
Clever right?
Ok, cheesy too, but I’m good with that! I’m not even sure it happened but I’m pretty sure I’ve heard enough people do something similar to believe it happened.
I was reminded of this when I was reading through the book of Daniel in the Bible. Its the point in the story where the king has had a dream that deeply troubles him. He asks all of his wise men and spiritual dudes to not just interpret the dream, but they have to tell him what the dream was first. None of them can do it; “its impossible” they tell him.
The king is frustrated at this and orders that all the wise men should be executed. When Daniel hears about this he asks for an audience with the king. The king describes it all again and Daniel responds.
Daniel replied, “No wise man, enchanter, magician or diviner can explain to the king the mystery he has asked about, 28 but there is a God in heaven who reveals mysteries. Daniel 2:27-28a
I just love how Daniel holds the seen and the unseen, the impossible and the possible together in this moment. It challenges me about how I do this in my life. Do I always believe that God is the God of the impossible? Do I believe He is the revealer of mysteries? And even more confronting than that – do I live my life like I believe that truth?
Too often this isn’t how we live as believers. We rely way too much on the tangible and ignore the intangible. We reduced faith to a management exercise. I want to challenge all of us to change that today!
Oh Father, help us not to reduce you to the sum of our possibilities and reason. Would we remember that we were created in your image, not the other way round. You are the God of the impossible, the revealer of mysteries and we trust you!
