I remember about 6 years or more ago being in a staff training day and the passage below was read out. At the time the Lord really ministered to me through it and it came up in my readings this week, so l enough I’d share it.
In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month on the first day, the word of the LORD came to me: “Son of man, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon drove his army in a hard campaign against Tyre; every head was rubbed bare and every shoulder made raw. Yet he and his army got no reward from the campaign he led against Tyre.
Therefore this is what the Sovereign LORD says: I am going to give Egypt to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will carry off its wealth. He will loot and plunder the land as pay for his army. I have given him Egypt as a reward for his efforts because he and his army did it for me, declares the Sovereign LORD. “On that day I will make a horn grow for the Israelites, and I will open your mouth among them. Then they will know that I am the LORD. ” Ezekiel 29:17-21
God is describing how King Neb (only his friends call him that) had worked hard to overcome Tyre. Tyre was a region north of Israel which had important trade routes and was an attractive addition for Neb. But for whatever reason Neb wasn’t able to win the war. The Lord was pleased with what they had done, He had called them to do this after all, and so decided to give him Egypt as a reward.
Tyre was attractive but Egypt was a huge reward. Egypt was one of the most historically prosperous and prodigiousplaces to overthrow. God was upgrading Neb’s portfolio here. Egypt was more than!
I feel that this passage encourages us to work hard with what the Lord has called us to. We might not see the breakthrough we desire, one external source says they seiged Tyre for 13 years, but we may gain a greater reward.
It helps me to keep things in the correct perspective and continue to push into what He has called me to. What might be the thing we are fighting for currently that we aren’t seeing the breakthrough in? What might be the ‘more than’ that God has in store?
