Worship is something I have been learning increasingly over my life. Like many followers of Jesus I had reserved worship to a 20 or 25 minute slot in a church service. In that time we sang songs, prayed etc. Also like many followers of Jesus as I’ve matured in my relationship with Jesus I have realised it’s so much more than that. Of course realising it and living are two very different things!
One thing I am noticing is that posture and position are the main keys when it comes to worship. When we look at the definition of worship from the Hebrew texts we read that worship means;
…..to bow down low (in worship); prostrate oneself; pay one honor, homage
In the New Testament Greek definition we read;
….to worship, pay homage, show reverence; to kneel down (before)
Do you notice that both definitions don’t just contain an emotional/spiritual response but a physical one also. They both state a position of bowing or kneeling, a coming low, a sitting under.
What they are telling us is that there is a repositioning that must occur in our worship. We place God in His rightful place as the Lord over everything and we put ourselves under His authority as His sons and daughters. Its vital that we do this again and again because most of the rest of the time we live out the reverse of this, where we elevate ourselves and ask God to bow low and serve us.
I see this happen so often. Its not that we don’t pray or think about God, its just that we think about Him wrongly and mix up the order. This will always leave us lacking. We will end up with a broken and wayward heart it our well-being is the focus of our worship.
The beauty and irony is that if we live out the right order, lifting God high and us bowing low, we will be filled more than ever. Just this morning l woke up early and as I lay in my bed my head starting thinking about different things I began to worry about some things. When I came downstairs to pray I decided not to pray about those things but instead I turned to worshipping God in my prayer. I was amazed at how quickly my spirit lifted as lifted my eyes ( I realise this shouldn’t be a surprise)
When we remind ourselves of who He is, how powerful is, how He created the heavens and the earth, how he knows every person, animal and plant, how he wakes up the sun and puts it to bed again it is more difficult to worry about anything else.
Lets turn our worry into worship today, lets position ourselves rightly before God today and watch how our world changes!
