Judging God on our terms

We are humans.

We have always been humans. We have been conditioned to think like humans. That means that we don’t have an understanding of anything that exists outside of our humanity. We only truly know and understand what feels natural to us.

That makes it tricky when it comes to trying to understand God. We apply our human rules and conditions, our attributes, and our attitudes to Him. We try and fit the creator and sustainer of the universe into our human laws. What we should have learnt over the years is that this is a futile exercise. We forget that we were created in His image, not the other way round.

“We can’t make God make sense on our terms, we have to make our lives make sense on His terms”

The prophet Isaiah puts it like this;

For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways,”
declares the LORD. “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts
. Isaiah 55:8-9

Of course it’s not wrong to ask God to reveal more of His nature to us in the process of getting to know Him more but let’s be careful we don’t get too mixed up in the searching that we someone try to lessen who He is to make Him more like us.
