Identity

I’m passionate about identity.

God is passionate about identity.

In our world identity is such a contested thing. As a culture we’ve become so detached from what our true identity is that we have started to attach it to everything and anything else that feels important to us. Currently we are seeing this play out when it comes to gender and our sexuality but it’s bigger than just that. We’ve become fixated with the idea that the things that we feel, think and sense are who we are. There is so much more to us than that but this truth can only be understood in the light of the Father.

I was reading this in Genesis and noticed something new to my eyes.

Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living beingGenesis 2:7 (NIV)

The man existed before He was alive. I’m not sure what the man was like before God breathed into his nostrils; a statue? a rock? a wax work?

Either way what this verse reveals to us are that our bodies are simply shells that have been inhabited by the very breath of God. That means that our identity has no existence outside of His breath. If we chose to not recognise that we will view ourselves as statues, lifeless forms that have no importance.

We can attach our identity to no other source, form or emotion than God. If we fail to do that we will never gain the true view of humanity and identity that He has in store for us.
