I just loved this part from this mornings reading;
Two things I ask of you, LORD;
do not refuse me before I die:
Keep falsehood and lies far from me;
give me neither poverty nor riches,
but give me only my daily bread.
Otherwise, I may have too much and disown you
and say, ‘Who is the LORD?’
Or I may become poor and steal,
and so dishonor the name of my God. Proverbs 30:7-9 (NIV)
The second part of the passage is what really grabbed me. It highlights the danger of us having too much and the equal danger of us having nothing.
We can easily identify with the two camps can’t we?
When we have abundance and plenty we can feel the temptation to forget that God is the source of our abundance and begin to praise ourselves for our cleverness and resourcefulness.
When we have lack we can get desperate and do whatever it takes to get out of that position. We’ll do things that go against who God has called us to be so we can cover our day to day needs.
When we get our daily bread then we don’t fall into either trap. We have to rely daily on God to provide so we never get ahead of ourselves but we never become desperate because we trust God to act and provide.
Oh Lord, give me enough for today!
