Today I was thinking about my leadership and what I hope to see happen through what God has called me to. I’m writing this at a time where I am hearing a number of stories of leaders who have fallen or failed in areas of character.
I’ve realised that as a leader there will be always things that I will succeed in and there will be things I will fail at. It’s impossible to succeed always, it’s impossible to always get it right and as a recovering perfectionist that hasn’t always been an easy journey.
Whilst there are things I have no control over, there are many things that I can choose. There are things that I have to ensure in my leadership journey I won’t fail in, and these are more important than any other ‘goals’ or ‘dreams’ that I may have. They are all character attributes not competency ones.
I commit to not failing in……
- Following Jesus with increasing passion
- Growing in love for my wife and my ability to choose her
- Being available for my son and giving him my best
- Guarding my integrity and refusing to give it up for popularity
- Being courageous when I hear Gods voice calling me to step out
- Giving people my best and apologising to them when I don’t
- Being generous with what I have been given
- Not becoming dependant on a position or role to form my identity
I want to succeed in so many other things. I want to see God do incredible things through me, our team and our church in our community. I hope and pray that He does but my job is to commit in succeeding in all of the above. If doing these things mean I fail in other areas people may want me to succeed then so be it.
What will we fail in?
